Among these, AI-generated fraud and deepfakes are now considered the most significant threats, surpassing traditional concerns like money laundering, account takeovers, and forgeries. Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services adds another perspective to this issue, predicting that generative AI could drive fraud losses in the United States from $12.3 billion in 2023 to an alarming $40 billion by 2027.
Natalie Kelly, Chief Risk Officer at Visa Europe, highlights a shifting focus among criminals: with robust security measures now protecting most card transactions, fraudsters are turning to exploit the ‘weakest link’—the human element.
The stakes are incredibly high. If AI can flawlessly imitate human biometrics or entirely fabricate a person’s digital presence, our most trusted security technologies could inadvertently become tools for fraudsters. Fraudsters used deepfake technology to impersonate his company’s UK-based chief financial officer and other staff members during a video call, convincing him to authorize substantial financial transactions. This incident, as reported by local media and further confirmed by UK engineering firm Arup amidst an ongoing investigation, underscores the high stakes of this emerging threat.
